Sponsoring Parents or Grandparents in Canada

Sponsoring Parents or Grandparents in Canada

Sponsoring parents or grandparents in Canada is a way for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their loved ones to Canada as permanent residents. The process of sponsoring parents or grandparents is called the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP).

To be eligible to sponsor a parent or grandparent, the sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and be at least 18 years old. The sponsor must also meet certain income requirements and agree to provide financial support for the parent or grandparent for a period of time.

The process of sponsoring a parent or grandparent begins with the sponsor submitting an Interest to Sponsor Form. This form is used to indicate the sponsor’s interest in participating in the PGP and is not a formal application. Once the Interest to Sponsor Form is submitted, the sponsor will be placed in a pool of potential sponsors.

Every year, the Government of Canada sets a limit on the number of parents and grandparents that can be sponsored through the PGP. Once the limit is reached, a draw is held to select potential sponsors from the pool. Selected sponsors are then invited to submit a formal application to sponsor their parent or grandparent.

The formal application process includes submitting a sponsorship agreement, which outlines the sponsor’s commitment to financially support the parent or grandparent, as well as a undertaking, which is a legally binding agreement between the sponsor and the government of Canada.

The parent or grandparent must also undergo a medical examination and obtain police certificates. They must also submit their own application for permanent residence, which includes providing information about their background, education, and work experience.

Once the formal application is submitted, it will be reviewed by the government of Canada to ensure that the sponsor and parent or grandparent meet all of the necessary requirements. If the application is approved, the parent or grandparent will be issued a permanent resident visa, allowing them to come to Canada as a permanent resident.

The process of sponsoring a parent or grandparent can take several years, and it is important for the sponsor and the parent or grandparent to be patient and understand that the process can take time.

It’s also important to note that the Canadian government has a policy of “right of permanent residence fee”, which is a fee of $500 CAD that must be paid by the parent or grandparent when they arrive in Canada as permanent residents.

Additionally, the sponsor is also responsible for providing financial support to the parent or grandparent for a period of time, which is typically 20 years. The sponsor must also sign a sponsorship agreement, which outlines the sponsor’s commitment to financially support the parent or grandparent. If the sponsor fails to provide the promised support, the parent or grandparent’s permanent resident status could be in jeopardy.
